Has it really been 200 episodes already? Wait—has it only been 200 episodes? Either way, on April 14, the newest episode of South Park will hit the 200 mark, proving to people everywhere that potty mouth language, toilet humor, and badly-drawn cartoons can provide long-lasting entertainment for the masses for much longer than anyone could have anticipated.
In honor of the 200th mark, South Park studios is hosting a big online congratulations party for Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of South Park, as well as the rest of the South Park crew who makes the show happen each week. They’re inviting fans from all over the globe to take part and submit in a photo, video, or other representation of what South Park means to them.
“Tell us about the first time you saw South Park,” the site advises; or simply send in something as a tribute to your favorite episode, character, or theme. They suggest sending in photos, drawings, live action video, a mash-up—whatever your creative brain dreams up to send in.
South Park, the site reminds us, got its own start as a viral video. (Can you believe it was fourteen years ago? That makes me feel rather old…) “The Spirit of Christmas” was, as the site, reminds us, an instant classic that people forwarded to one another via the old archaic footage known as VHS—as well as snail mail. “What better way to celebrate the historic 200th episode of South Park than let fans create and share their own viral videos?”
Just log on to SouthPark200.com to read the rules and share your own artistic vision. In late March, you’ll be able to view the rest of the videos and other media uploaded as well. Quicktime, WMV, H.265 and Flash videos will be accepted; all videos should be under 2 minutes in total length. For more rules and guidelines, and to submit your work, be sure to visit the site.
Of course, you can always celebrate the 200th episode your own way—by hosting a South Park house party, dressing as your favorite character (Mr. Slave, anyone?), or holding a marathon throughout March until the big episode. Of course, you can always just hang out at South Park Studios for the latest news, videos, spoilers and video clips. I wonder what kind of shenanigans they’ve got up their sleeve for this commemorative episode…
