As an avid South Park watcher, I have grown to know the main characters Eric, Stan, Kyle and Kenny as if they were my own friends. When the creators finally killed off Kenny for good in the end of season five - he did reappear a few times in the sixth season, and he is now back permanently - they decided to bring in a new fourth grader.
During Kenny's absence, a new character came aboard to replace the missing friend. After many kids were auditioned for the role by the remaining lead characters, one was finally chosen - Butters.
The funny, yellow-haired child had actually been on the show since the first season, but only as a background player. It was finally Butters' turn to shine. His full name is Leopold "Butters" Stotch, a play on the word, and delicious candy, butterscotch. Unlike the other kids, Butters has an innocent nature about him. He is always the pansy, and it is so much fun to watch him be punished by his parents for things that he never could have done.
In the eyes of his parents, Butters never seems to do anything right. He seems to spend most of his life grounded for ridiculous events. I am sure if World War III were to break out, his parents would punish him for that. Of course, the wild antics of Cartman do nothing to help keep Butters out of trouble.
Even though they seem very strict, Butters' parents really love him - except for that time his mom tried to drown him in the river - but haven't all parents done something similar? He is a hometown boy that is being raised in a conservative house.
Due to his innocence, he is always the wingman for the team. You will never hear him cussing. Instead, he likes to swear by saying things like "oh bananas" and "aww hamburgers."
I only wish that I could have a friend as naive and happy-go-lucky as Butters.
