Rarely do you see these outlandish episodes of South Park that are not really related to any happenings in the recent news. But, every so once in a while they will tend to stray from the status quota and actually render an off the wall and very goofy episode, as was seen in last week’s “Pinewood Derby.” In so many words, the episode has nothing really much to do with popular culture. Rather, it once again takes the loveable idiot that is Randy Marsh and features him as the staple of yet another episode. I can’t say I didn’t like this episode as it was fairly funny and original. But, one is left to wonder if they will ever veer away from overdoing it with the Marsh factor and focusing more on the boys that made the show what it is today.
What Were They Thinking
An evil alien comes down to earth after Randy steals a prototype magnet and uses it to cheat in the annual wooden boxcar race that his son, Stan, always loses. When the boxcar flies off the ramp and enters into outer space, and hits warp speed, the aliens come down and want to talk to Randy and Stan—the creators of the car. Little do they know that it is an evil alien that is being hunted by space police, one that needs a new warp drive to getaway? However, even weirder is that the whole thing is a gimmick by the Federation of Planets to see if humans are smart enough to enter their astute order of the universe.
South Park Veering Away from Popular Culture Antics
This episode is a classic notion that the show will indeed sometimes veer away from the popular culture habitat that it has made for itself over the years. The show typically likes to portray modern happenings from the news or celebrity events to make fun of. But this season, they seem to be grooming the show back to its roots: oddball humor that is original and funny. And it seems to be working for the most part.
Hilarious Clip from Newest Episode “We Gotta Get Rid of Finland”
